Meknes and Volubilis day trip from Fes

Overview

Meknes is a city in northern Morocco. It’s known for its imperial past, with remnants including Bab Mansour, a huge gate with arches and mosaic tiling. The gate leads into the former imperial city. The Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who made the city his capital in the 17th century, has courtyards and fountains. To the south, ruined Heri es-Souani is a vast structure once used as stables and for food storage.
Volubilis is a partly excavated Berber and Roman city in Morocco situated near the city of Meknes, and commonly considered as the ancient capital of the kingdom of Mauretania

Itinerary

9:00 AM: Departure from Fez

Embark on a captivating journey through time as we depart from Fez to explore the remarkable Roman ruins of Volubilis. As we wander through this UNESCO World Heritage Site, immerse yourself in the echoes of the past, spanning over 2,000 years, and envision life during the Roman Empire.
Our exploration continues as we make our way to Moulay Idriss, nestled amidst picturesque landscapes. Here, pay homage to the revered Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the founder of Fez, one of Morocco’s holiest cities.

11:30 AM: Arrival in Meknes

Marvel at the grandeur of Meknes as we arrive and are greeted by the magnificent view of the ancient medina. Begin our tour with a visit to the monumental walls adorned with impressive gates, dating back to the seventeenth century, including Berdaine Bab and Bab Khemis.

Embark on a journey through Meknes’s rich history as we explore the city’s landmarks, from the stables (Rua) to the attics (HERI), and the prestigious Stud. Delve into the city’s religious heritage with a visit to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, once the only mosque open to non-Muslims in Morocco.

3:00 PM: Discovering Meknes’s Cultural Treasures

Wander through the renowned Bab El Mansour and step into the vast square of Hedim, pulsating with the energy of daily life. Explore the exquisite Moroccan craftsmanship at the Museum of Moroccan Art, “Dar Jamai,” where a diverse array of crafts awaits.

6:00 PM: Return to Fez

As the day draws to a close, we bid farewell to Meknes and journey back to Fez, reflecting on the rich tapestry of history and culture woven throughout our adventure.
