The Wind
Essaouira sits on a headland fully exposed to the Atlantic — the Alizé trade wind blows consistently from the north-west, making it one of the world's most reliable wind destinations. Average wind speed: 25–30 knots in summer. Wind season: April–October. This is why Essaouira is Morocco's windsurfing capital and increasingly popular with kitesurfers.
Surfing
Essaouira's beach (Plage d'Essaouira, extending south for 15km) offers consistent Atlantic swells. The main beach break is suitable for intermediate surfers; the southern extension (Sidi Kaouki, 20km south) is Morocco's premier surf break — consistent 1–3m waves, world-class right-hand point break. Surf schools and board rental available at both beaches.
Windsurfing & Kitesurfing
The consistent Alizé wind and long flat beach make Essaouira a world-ranked windsurfing destination — it has hosted PWA World Tour events. Equipment rental and lessons from established beach schools. Best season: June–September for maximum wind consistency.
The Medina
Essaouira's UNESCO-listed medina is unlike any other in Morocco — orderly, whitewashed, navigable without a map, and permeated with the smell of fresh fish and cedar wood. The ramparts (the Skala de la Ville) overlook the Atlantic directly — the most dramatic defensive walls in Morocco.
Gnawa Music
Essaouira is the world capital of Gnawa music — a trance-inducing spiritual music tradition brought by sub-Saharan African populations centuries ago. The annual Gnawa World Music Festival (June) draws 500,000 visitors. Year-round, you will find Gnawa musicians in the medina and at the port.
