What to see in Tangier
The Kasbah
The fortified hilltop citadel of Tangier — home to the Kasbah Museum with panoramic views across the medina and the Strait of Gibraltar. The sultan's former palace gardens are serene and beautiful.
Cap Spartel & Hercules Cave
The dramatic sea caves where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, 14km west of Tangier. The cave mouth opening looks like Africa on a map — an iconic and eerie sight.
The Grand Socco
The central square of Tangier — a social hub where the old medina meets the French-built ville nouvelle. Thursday and Sunday markets fill the space with Rif Berber women in traditional striped garments.
The Medina
Less touristy and more authentic than Marrakech's medina. The Tangier medina has a distinctive Andalusian-Moroccan hybrid character — whitewashed walls, blue-painted doorways, and steep winding lanes.
The American Legation Museum
The only US National Historic Landmark outside the United States. Morocco was the first country to recognize American independence in 1777 — this former US diplomatic mission is now a museum.
Paul Bowles Trail
Tangier's literary legacy lives on. Visit the Café Hafa where Paul Bowles and the Beats spent their afternoons, the Hotel El Minzah, and the American Legation Museum with original photographs.
