The Marrakech Sahara route, stop by stop
Every stop on this route is a reason to travel to Morocco in its own right. Together they form the most rewarding desert circuit in North Africa.
Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m)
The High Atlas crossing — the most dramatic road in Morocco. Snow-capped peaks, Berber mountain villages, hairpin bends with Atlas panoramas. Your first view south of the mountains is into Africa.
Ait Benhaddou
UNESCO World Heritage kasbah — the most photographed building in Morocco. Filming location for Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and Lawrence of Arabia. 1-hour guided walk through the living kasbah village with your licensed guide.
Rose Valley (Vallée des Roses)
Between Ouarzazate and Boumalne Dades, the road runs through 200km of rose fields. Peak fragrance: late April to early May. The valley produces 4,000 tonnes of roses annually — 80% of Morocco's rose water and cosmetics.
Dades Gorge
The Morocco Grand Canyon. Dramatic canyon walls rising 300m above the road, carved by the Dades River. Overnight in a gorge-view riad — waking to canyon light at sunrise is one of Morocco's great travel experiences.
Sahara Arrival — Erg Chigaga or Merzouga
The moment Morocco delivers its final revelation — the Sahara. Dune fields stretching to the horizon. Sunset camel ride for two. Berber camp dinner with a musician. Sleeping in a furnished desert tent with en-suite bathroom.
Desert Dawn
Sunrise from the dunes in absolute silence — no phone signal, no ambient light, no other tourists within miles. Then: 4WD through the hammada stone desert and back over the Atlas, or north to Fes for the complete circuit.
How far is Marrakech from the Sahara?
The Sahara (Erg Chigaga) is approximately 550 km from Marrakech — 6–7 hours by private 4WD via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the Draa Valley. The standard Marrakech–Sahara round trip is done in 3 days (minimum) with overnight stops at Ait Benhaddou and in the desert. The one-way Marrakech–Sahara–Fes circuit is 7 days and covers Morocco's most iconic landscape.
