Toubkal Trek at a Glance

The Summit

4,167m — the highest point in the Atlas Mountains and all of North Africa. On clear days, visibility extends to the Anti-Atlas, the Saharan plains, and even the distant Canary Islands on exceptional days. The summit plateau is rocky and exposed — reaching it in good conditions is a genuine achievement.

Day 1 — Imlil to the Refuge

The trek begins in Imlil village (1,740m). 5–6 hours through Berber villages (Aroumd, Sidi Chamharouch) to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m). Elevation gain: 1,460m. The refuge sleeps 60 in dormitory or private rooms with basic catering.

Day 2 — Summit Push

Early start (6am) for the summit push. 2.5–3 hours to the top via the South Cirque — rocky, steep, non-technical in summer. Summit descent and return to Imlil by late afternoon. Total day: 8–10 hours walking.

3-Day Acclimatisation Option

Add Day 0 in Imlil for altitude acclimatisation (sleeping at 1,740m) before the trek. Recommended for travelers arriving from sea-level on the day of departure. Day 3 alternative: instead of returning to Imlil, loop via the Azzaden Valley — dramatically scenic, quieter than the main route.

Winter Toubkal (November–May)

Toubkal holds snow above 3,000m from November to May. The summit push requires crampons and ice axe — MSITravels provides all technical equipment. Winter ascents are quieter, dramatically beautiful, and technically more demanding. An ice and mixed experience background is recommended.

What to Bring

Summer: trekking boots (mandatory — not trail runners), trekking poles, sun protection SPF 50, warm layers (summit wind chill can be severe), 3 litres water capacity. Winter: add crampons, ice axe, -10°C sleeping bag. Full equipment list provided on booking.

Quick Answer

Is the Toubkal trek hard?

The standard summer route requires no technical climbing. The main challenge is altitude — 1,460m elevation gain on Day 1 to the refuge, then 960m to the summit on Day 2. Fit hikers with walking experience complete it successfully. Altitude sickness risk is real above 3,500m — the 3-day acclimatisation option significantly reduces this risk. A licensed guide is mandatory and included in all MSITravels Toubkal bookings.
