Morocco's classic southern circuit in reverse — Fes to Marrakech via the Sahara. Meknes, Middle Atlas cedar forest, Ziz Valley oasis, Todra Gorge, desert camp, Rose Valley, Dades Gorge, Ait Benhaddou, and the High Atlas crossing into Marrakech.
Begin in Fes el-Bali — a full medina day before departure south. Tanneries, Bou Inania, Al-Qarawiyyin. The best way to leave Fes is having spent real time in it.
Drive south via Meknes — Bab Mansour gate, Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, Heri es-Souani granaries. Continue to Volubilis Roman ruins (UNESCO) — Morocco's best-preserved ancient site. Overnight: Meknes or Azrou.
Middle Atlas drive through Azrou cedar forest (Barbary macaques), Ifrane Swiss village, Ziz Valley palm oasis — 200km of date palms filling the valley floor. A landscape unlike anything in northern Morocco.
300m limestone canyon walls — the Fes-to-Marrakech route approaches the gorge from the north for a dramatic first view. Gorge walk, overnight at a gorge-edge riad.
Drive south via Tinghir to the Sahara. Merzouga Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga (via Zagora and M'Hamid). Sunset camel ride, luxury Berber camp dinner, stargazing.
Rose Valley, Dades Gorge, Ait Benhaddou UNESCO kasbah, Tizi n'Tichka High Atlas pass (2,260m), and down into Marrakech. The most dramatic arrival into any Moroccan city.
Both routes cover identical landscapes in opposite directions — neither is objectively better. Fes-to-Marrakech ends with the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka Atlas descent into Marrakech — a cinematic final approach. Marrakech-to-Fes ends in Morocco's most complex medina city — saving the cultural peak for last. Choose based on your flight routing: fly into Fes, fly out of Marrakech — or vice versa.
