What to drink — and what to avoid

Tap Water Verdict

Not recommended for visitors

Technically treated but local mineral content can upset new arrivals. Always drink bottled water during your stay.

Sidi Ali

Morocco's #1 still water

The most widely available Moroccan mineral water brand — pleasant taste, found in every corner shop and medina store for 5–8 MAD per 500ml.

Oulmes Sparkling

Natural carbonation

Morocco's famous sparkling mineral water from a CO₂ spring near Khénifra — a local institution since 1933 and a meal-table staple.

Desert Hydration

Minimum 3.5L/day in summer

Sahara temperatures exceed 45°C in summer. MSITravels stocks cold bottles in every vehicle — drink before you feel thirsty.

Mint Tea is Safe

Boiled = safe

Moroccan mint tea is made with boiling water — completely safe and one of Morocco's great pleasures. Drink as much as you want.

Fresh Orange Juice

4 MAD at Djemaa el-Fna

Freshly squeezed to order from whole oranges — entirely safe and genuinely one of the world's great cheap drinks.

Quick answer: Is tap water safe to drink in Morocco?

Drink bottled water — always. Tap water in Moroccan cities is treated and technically potable, but the local mineral content and aged pipe infrastructure can cause stomach upset in newly arrived visitors. Bottled water costs 5–8 MAD (under €0.75) per 500ml and is available everywhere. Sidi Ali is the standard recommendation — still, pleasant, widely available. In the Sahara or in summer, drink at least 3.5 litres per day. Mint tea, coffee, and fresh orange juice are safe to drink throughout Morocco.
