Morocco Travel Tips 2025

Practical, honest advice from Aziz Sakri — covering bargaining, taxi etiquette, SIM cards, safety, and everything first-time visitors always ask before arriving.

Top 3 Tips

The three tips that matter most

  • Get a local SIM at the airport: Maroc Telecom tourist SIM — 50 MAD for 10GB. Eliminates all roaming charges and gives reliable data for offline maps.
  • Use ATMs, not airport exchange desks: Bank ATMs in cities give the best exchange rates. Draw cash on arrival — most medina transactions are cash-only.
  • Say no confidently: “La shukran” (no thank you) to unofficial guides and touts. Don't explain, apologize, or engage — just keep walking.

Money & Payments

  • Use ATMs in cities for best exchange rates — Visa/Mastercard widely accepted
  • Carry MAD cash for medinas, small restaurants, and tips
  • Dirham is a closed currency — exchange leftover MAD before leaving Morocco
  • Always check if service charge is included on restaurant bills

Getting Around

  • Always agree taxi fares before entering — demand the meter in Marrakech
  • Grand taxis (shared long-distance taxis) have fixed routes and prices
  • ONCF trains are excellent: Casablanca–Fes–Tangier are fast and reliable
  • Private 4x4 with MSITravels driver eliminates all transport hassles

Health & Safety

  • Drink bottled water only — do not drink from taps or fountains
  • Carry hand sanitizer and toilet paper — squat toilets common in medinas
  • Apply sunscreen and wear a hat — UV is intense, even in winter
  • Travel insurance is essential — include medical evacuation cover

Cultural Etiquette

  • Remove shoes before entering mosques, riads, and some traditional homes
  • Accept mint tea when offered — declining can seem rude
  • Greet with 'As-salamu alaykum' — the response is 'Wa alaykum as-salam'
  • Ramadan etiquette: avoid eating/drinking visibly in public during daylight

Souks & Shopping

  • Counter-offer at 30% of asking price and negotiate upward slowly
  • Visit Centre Artisanal first to understand fair prices before souk shopping
  • Buy argan oil from women's cooperatives only — guarantees fair trade
  • Carpet sellers are very persuasive — only enter shops if you want to buy

Connectivity & Practicalities

  • Buy Maroc Telecom SIM at the airport (50 MAD for 10GB) — far cheaper than roaming
  • Most riads have WiFi but it can be slow — download offline maps before arrival
  • Friday is the Islamic holy day — some sights and souks close midday
  • Photography permission: always ask before photographing people or animals
